Forensics science

THE FEET CAN MEASURE THE HEIGHT

The bones of the feet can tell a lot about a person. What do feet reveal about a person's height? Forensic anthropologists team up with law enforcers to help solve crimes.
Bones of the feet can reveal an interesting fact about an individual. Let's combine math with forensics to see how.

Image result for foot chart sizeImage result for foot to height ratio chart
Aim:  To use forensic science techniques to measure the height of a criminal.

Material:

  1.  One meter ruler.
  2. Human.
  3. Shoe.

  4.

Steps:

  1.  Get a one meter ruler .
  2.  measure your shoe .
  3.  measure your height .
  4. record your height.
  5.  record your foot length.
Findings:

Name
Foot  (cm)
Height (cm)
Faye24.5 cm143 cm
Qyn25.5 cm145 cm
Kristille23.5 cm 144 cm

Divide the length of each person's foot by his/her height. then multiply it by 100.
Faye : 17.1
Qyn : 17.5
Kristille : 16.3

 Conclusion:
We found out that my foot length and my height is 24.5 cm and we also found out that my height is 143 cm. We found out that Qyn had a 25.5 cm foot and her height was 145 cm (with her shoes on). We also found out that Kristille foot length is 23.5 cm and her height is 144 (With shoes on). We found this all out by measuring each other  one by one with a big ruler.

Kahawai

Discussion Doc
Kahawai

WALT: use what we already know to make meaning within a story.

Task
Work on this Doc together with a buddy, or in a group of 3.

When do you think this story takes place? I.e. If in the future, how many years into the future?
I think this would be in 2040

Is this the first time Āreta and Trish have taken the boat out fishing. Yes/ No

How do you know?
I think it wasn’t their first time because it seems like they know how to fish

What do you think the author means by regular people when he says “...back when regular people could still get petrol.”?
I think it means when people used to do things that were regular and when the earth was still normal.

In this story, what exactly does the Forest refer to?
  • It refers to the wind mills I think
Where is this story set do you think?
  • I think this was in a beach
What are the clues that tell you this?
    • because it had a lot of sand

Why is Grandma Trish so excited to find a Kahawai again. What has happened to them?
  • I think they were surprised because they thought all of the fish were gone.
Explain why you think this.
    • because the water was polluted with pollution

Why do Trish and Āreta let the Kahawai go back into the water?

    • So that the fish can make more fish and there might be a chance of them getting more fish.

How exercise helps you body.

How does exercise affect our body and mind?
Exercise helps you get fit and it also can help you lose weight. It can affect your mind by making your heart pump which gives oxygen to your mind.
Write what you currently do for fitness
The fitness that I currently do right now is basket ball on Fridays and biking in the weekends.
Write a goal for your fitness that you would like to achieve.
My goal is to bike once a week and play basket ball twice a week to help me get better at basket ball.

4 types of filters

Hurumanu - Dirty Water experiment

Aim: To make a filtration plant using household materials.

Image result for filtration science experiment
Water Filtration Plant

What is filtration?

Filtration is separating solids from liquids by adding a medium through which only the liquid can pass.

Examples are:

  1.  Oil filters
  2.  air filters
  3.  water filters
  4. internet filters

Materials

1.Water with dirt
2.plastic bottle
3.rocks
4.sand
5.filter paper
6.
7.
8.

Process - ( use verbs or doing words in each step )

Step 1

Cut the bottle in where it has no lines

Step 2

Put the top half upside down in the bottle

STEP 3

Add layers of sand

STEP 4

Get 1 cup of dirty water

STEP 5

Pour dirty water into the funnel

Findings

Write a short sentence about the water every 1 minute.
Include 'How much water has filtered through', 'How fast it is dripping through', and 'How clear the water is'.

Minutes                          1.                         2.                   3.                    4.                       5.
Drops per minute:     19
Water colour:           beige
Conclusion:At the end water looked like it was clean and there were no pieces of dirt. The colour of the water looked like a sandy colour to me but lighter. Each minute it dropped 19 drops of water. At the start the water was dripping pretty quick but as we left it for longer it started to slow down until it finally stopped. If the water goes out side of the funnel it might be faster, but if it goes in the funnel it will go slower.

White powder

WEDNESDAY, MAY 1, 2019

Hurumanu - What is that white powder?

Today you will be a Forensic Chemist.
A bag of white powder has been confiscated by the airport customs.  You need to find out what white powder it is?

Aim: To learn about the makeup of different white powders.

There are  a number of different white powders in our everyday life. Some of these are harmful and others are not. Test the four white powders listed to see which one has been found at the airport.

Here are some examples of everyday kitchen white powders.

Flour, Cornflour, Sugar, Salt, Baking Soda, Baking Powder, Icing Sugar, Tartaric Acid

Citric Acid, Gluten Free flour

You will be given a small amount of 4 white powders on your cardboard. On the black cardboard using a magnifying glass look at the powders.
Look at them under your magnifying glass and record what you see.

These are the four powders we will be using. Upload a photo of each powder.

1.  Cornflour
2.  Baking Soda
3.  Salt
4.  Sugar

Before you add the iodine, vinegar or water you will need to divide each powder into 3.

Materials
1.  Salt
2.  Baking soda
Cx3.  Sugar
4.  Cornflour
5.  Vinegar
6.   Water
7. Iodine

Steps

1.  Folded paper in to four
2. Wrote on the paper
3. we put the different materials on the paper
4. put the vinegar in
5.
6.

Findings:

Write a paragraph about your findings.
We fount out that if you put different types of liquid  it will change the texture of it. We found out that if you put iodine in baking soda it will harden. We found out that if you put iodine in some of these it will change colour and turn in to brown. The sugars appearance was white, It had no smell, and if you added iodine it will turn brown, If you add water it'll feel wet, If you also add vinegar it'll also feel wet. The salts temperance was white, the texture was medium,It had no smell to it,If you add iodine to it, It will absorb it,If you add water it will also absorb, but if you add vinegar it will fizz up.Baking sodas appearance was white, the texture was small,It didn't smell like anything if you add iodine to it it will harden, If you add water it will absorb and harden, and if you add vinegar it will only absorb it. The appearance of the cornflour was white, It didn't really smell like anything if you add any of the material it will only slide off.
